Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could devote her day to art literature or theater as well as other activities. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned by example the power of art as an instrument for social activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social conscience and advised DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. Although DuVernay lived in Compton and with her extended family, she was a summer resident with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father recalled the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma led her later on to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles when she graduated, where she obtained degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury. She was also asked to go through their garbage. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism due to the work she was assigned, she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a PR professional in the small studio that she worked in after college. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. The agency has launched a wide range different lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
